Nike Dunks
The Nike Dunk, designed by Peter Moore, debuted in 1985 as a basketball shoe, part of the "Be True to Your School" campaign, with colorways matching prominent college teams. While initially popular on the court, its basketball appeal waned as more advanced models emerged, leading to its unexpected adoption by skateboarders in the 1990s who valued its durability and grip. Recognizing this organic shift, Nike launched its Nike SB (Skateboarding) division in 2002, re-engineering the Dunk with features like a padded tongue and Zoom Air cushioning specifically for skateboarding. This marked the beginning of the Dunk's meteoric rise to global streetwear icon status, fueled by limited releases, influential collaborations with artists and brands, and a strong emphasis on storytelling, transforming it from a forgotten court shoe into a highly sought-after cultural phenomenon.
